Hilton Head Island Sunsets Are Breathtaking
One of many beautiful sunsets we caught on Hilton Head Island. This picture was taken at the Shelter Cove Veterans Memorial just minutes from the Hilton Head Island Resort.
Proximity and Accessibility
Situated off the South Carolina coast, this barrier island blends nature, rich history, amazing restaurants and amenities for all ages. Hilton Head Island is easily reachable from most major cities in the Southeast. Whether you're arriving by car or landing at the Hilton Head Island Airport, accessing the island’s locations is super easy.
A Year Round Destination
We have been visiting HHI with our kids for many years and to be honest, it really doesn’t matter which month you decide to make the trip because there is always something going on. In the spring, the temperatures are moderate and you may be able to catch the Hilton Head Wine & Food Festival. The fall and winter months are also pleasant with fewer crowds and more affordable accommodations.
However, we usually find ourselves traveling to HHI during the summer months when our teens our out on summer vacation. This could argually be the busiest time of year for the island but it has never deterred us from visiting. The weather is humid and thunderstorms can be expected, BUT the beautiful and clean beaches won’t disappoint.
On a recent visit, we were lucky enough to discover some of the island's best spots. Here's a rundown of some of our faves!
1. Coligny Beach Plaza is the perfect starting point. With an array of shops, restaurants, and entertainment, it's a hub of activity. Don't forget to take a stroll down the beach and soak up the sun while watching the waves roll in.
2. Coco's on the Beach was an entire vibe. Imagine sipping on a chilled EXTRA STRONG “Category 5” cocktail while admiring views of the Atlantic and the adjacent beautiful golf course, all the while eating one of the best patty melts on the planet! Coco's offers just that – an idyllic beachfront location for relaxation, great food and people watching. If you stay at the Hilton Head Resort, you will be steps away from the beach and this amazing spot.
3. Sea Pines Resort, located on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina, offers a wide range of activities and amenities including:
Golf - Sea Pines is a golf lovers paradise. Maybe one day, Henry and I will get into golfing. Henry loves going to the driving range, but I have actually never been!
Beaches - Sea Pines has several beach access points where you can swim, sunbathe, or take leisurely strolls. When the kids were little, we actually found a horshoe crab right on the beach. How cool is that!?
Biking - Sea Pines Resort has a network of bike paths that wind through the most lush and beautiful landscapes, giving you the opportunity to discover the island at your own pace.
Tennis - Tennis enthusiasts can play on top-notch courts, take lessons, or join clinics at the Sea Pines Racquet Club, which hosts several prestigious tennis events throughout the year.
Water Sports - There are a variety of water activities such as kayaking, paddleboarding, and boating. The resort offers rentals and guided tours for water adventures.
Horseback Riding - Take a scenic horseback ride through the trails of Sea Pines Forest Preserve
Nature Trails - Explore the resort's nature trails, including the Sea Pines Forest Preserve, but beware! There is no shortage of alligators. We actually had a close call with a gator at the Preserve back in 2013. It was a scary experience, but one that often comes up in conversation.
Harbour Town - Visit the iconic Harbour Town area, which is known for its distinctive red-and-white-striped lighthouse, boutique shops, dining, and marina.
Dining - Enjoy a variety of restaurants offering fresh seafood, Southern cuisine, and international flavors.
Spa and Wellness - Pamper yourself with spa treatments and wellness activities.
Fitness: For the fitness buffs, you won’t be disappointed with the selection of fitness centers, yoga classes, and other health-focused activities available at the resort.
By no means is this an exhaustive list of things to do, but as you can see, Sea Pines Resort offers a diverse range of activities to cater to every traveler's interests and preferences. Finding parking at the shopping center at Sea Pines resort can be bit of a challenge, but it is well worth the effort.
4. Hilton Head Ice Cream is one of many parlors throughout the island, but Hilton Head Ice Cream is a local favorite. Although the line was out of the door when we arrived, it moved quickly and was very much worth the wait. Henry and I were in heaven!
5. The Salty Dog Cafe is an iconic restaurant on the island. Chances are you have seen someone with a salty dog t-shirt, especially if you have travelled along the east coast. What people may not know is that there is a second Salty Dog Cafe location quietly tucked in the HHI Tanger outlet. The Salty Dog offers a taste of local culture with its range of seafood dishes, live music, and a lively atmosphere.
6. Tanger Outlets are pretty much a staple in most tourist traps and HHI is no exception. There are two parts to the Tanger complex on HHI and are found about a mile apart. You could easily spend hours checking out the 90+ retailers that are on-site.
7. Ruan Thai came as an absolute shock to us. Our little piece of advice would be to not judge a book by it’s cover. Ruan Thai may have been a drive through joint in its previous life, but once you enter the building, you will be greeted with a friendly staff and an extensive menu of Thai classics, ensuringthere's something for everyone. Pro Tip: you will want to make a reservation as there is limited seating.
Here's a fun fact: Hilton Head Island was named after Captain William Hilton, who explored the region in the 17th century!
Tips for a Memorable Visit
Pack for the Beach: Ensure you have sunblock, a hat, and water to keep you hydrated. We also love the neso tent if you plan to be out on the beach all day.
Local Eateries: Try local dishes, particularly the seafood, for an authentic experience.
Rent a Bike: The island is bike-friendly and offers numerous trails for exploration.
In conclusion, Hilton Head Island is more than just a vacation destination; it's an experience. Whether you're a history buff, nature lover, or just looking to relax, the island has something for everyone. Safe travels!
